Why We Focus on Teams When Improving Organizations
Understanding the role of teams as the true engines of effective organizations
“Why the strong focus on teams?” 🤷♀️
“If you want to improve how an organization works, wouldn’t it make more sense to start with leadership? With management? With the C-suite?” 🤔
Fair questions we get from time to time. So here’s why we focus on teams.
Yes, leaders set the direction and hold the levers of change. But teams are where the *real* work happens.
Since Christiaan Verwijs and I started The Liberators 8 years ago, we’ve always focused on teams. Not because it was trendy, but because we’ve experienced the power of great teams firsthand. It’s within teams that skills, ambition, and potential come (or can come) together to create real impact.
Practically speaking, teams are the engines of every organization.
👉 It’s teams where strategy turns into action.
👉 It’s teams where problems are surfaced, solved — or sometimes… stuck.
👉 It’s teams where cracks in the system show up first.
👉 It’s teams where people learn how to work through challenges together.
👉 It’s teams where culture is felt most directly, healthy or not.

And by “teams,” we mean any group of people brought together to achieve something, whether in software, product, operations, or beyond. If there’s no shared purpose, that’s usually the first thing that surfaces.
That’s why teams are the best place to start. When you help teams become more effective, you also uncover what might need to change at other levels: goals, communication, priorities, dependencies, and policies.
And yes, we work with leaders and managers too. Most team-level challenges can’t be solved in isolation. They need shared ownership, support from above, and alignment across leadership.
It’s about creating dialogue with leadership, not bypassing it. We help teams open up the right conversations with leaders, because lasting change needs both.
In short:
✅ If teams thrive, the organization thrives.
✅ If you want to boost your business, start with your teams.
And if you’re wondering how to do that in a structured, data-informed, science-backed way… Well, that’s exactly what Columinity is for. 😉
