Tips To Start Your Own User Group Or Community

Five years ago, Christiaan Verwijs and I started The Liberators Network. It became a global community to help people & teams with the many challenges they face with Agile & Liberating Structures. In time, we also supported the launch of ±25 local user groups. Some stopped, some are just getting started, and others have already thriving for years.

I frequently get asked for recommendations to start a user group or community (of practice). So, here you go! The tips are purposefully generic, so they apply to any kind of user group you want to start.

1. Define the purpose 🎯

Clearly define the purpose and goals of your community. Determine what it will be centered around. This will attract like-minded individuals who are passionate about the same things.

2️. Identify your ideal community members

What is your target audience? Whom do you want as members? Who not? What language will you use? What specific region do you want to focus on? Many questions that shape the type of community you’ll have.

3️. Choose your tooling ⚒️

Online communities can utilize dedicated community platforms. If it’s an offline community, consider suitable meeting spaces and logistics.

4️. Develop community guidelines ❌ ✅

Establish clear and concise guidelines that outline acceptable behavior, rules, and expectations within the community. Encourage respectful dialogue, discourage trolling, and foster a safe and inclusive environment.

5️. Create engaging content & material

Provide valuable content & products that align with your community’s purpose. Consistently share content that encourages participation and interaction among community members.

6️. Promote interaction and participation

Actively engage with your community members and encourage their participation during and around meetups. Encourage members to share their knowledge, experiences, and expertise. Liberating Structures definitely helps to achieve it!

7️. Be a servant leader

As the community leader, you are a servant leader. Encourage an atmosphere of open communication and make yourself approachable. Address issues promptly and fairly to maintain a positive community environment.

8️. Encourage Collaboration

Facilitate collaboration and connection among community members. Provide opportunities for individuals to collaborate on projects, share resources, or organize meetups. This can strengthen the bonds within the community and create a sense of belonging.

9️. Inspect and adapt!

Stay open to feedback and be willing to adapt and evolve as your community grows. Regularly assess the needs and interests of your members and make adjustments accordingly. Embrace new technologies or trends that can enhance the community experience.
