10 Tips To Become A Better Scrum Master

When I started working as a Scrum Master about 14 years ago, I wasn’t highly successful. I took quite some time to discover how to fulfill the role effectively. In hindsight, it wasn’t all rocket science. Yet stripping down the role to its essence was an interesting and challenging journey. In this post, I share 10 concisely described tips that helped me along the way. This list is far from complete, so feel free to add your ideas as well!

1️. Understand the Scrum framework and its purpose 🎯

Deeply familiarize yourself with the Scrum framework, its roles, artifacts, and events. This foundational knowledge will allow you to guide your team through the Scrum process effectively. Understand why your team or organization wants to use Scrum, and if it’s a good fit in the first place.

2. Be a Servant Leader 😇

Embrace the servant leadership (or true leadership) style by supporting and empowering your team members. Facilitate collaboration, remove obstacles, and create a positive work environment that encourages self-organization and continuous improvement.

3. Foster open communication

Establish a culture of transparency and open communication within the team. Encourage all team members to express their thoughts, concerns, and ideas freely. Actively listen and ensure that everyone’s perspectives are heard and valued.

4. Facilitate effective Scrum events

Make sure the Scrum events achieve their purpose. You don’t have to facilitate all of them yourself. This might be helpful in the beginning but try not to become the bottleneck. Instead, teach team members how to get the most out of the events themselves.

5. Coach and Mentor

Act as a coach and mentor for the team members. Help them understand and apply Scrum principles and practices. Encourage their professional growth and provide guidance whenever needed.

6. Remove obstacles ❌

Identify and remove any impediments or obstacles that hinder the team’s progress. Work closely with the Product Owner, developers, management, and stakeholders to resolve issues and ensure the team has the necessary resources and support to deliver value consistently.

7. Encourage continuous improvement

Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the team. Encourage them to reflect on their processes and outcomes, identify areas for improvement, and experiment with new ideas or practices. Support initiatives for learning and growth.

8. Promote collaboration 🤝

Facilitate collaboration among team members and across different roles and departments. Encourage the sharing of knowledge, ideas, and best practices. Help bridge any gaps and foster a sense of unity and collective ownership.

9. Practice an agile mindset

Embrace the agile values and principles beyond just the Scrum framework. Encourage adaptability, flexibility, and responsiveness to change. Foster a culture that values learning, experimentation, and iterative delivery.

10. Continuously learn and evolve ✅

Stay up to date with the latest trends & practices. Attend conferences, join communities or local user groups, and read books or articles to broaden your knowledge and refine your skills as a Scrum Master.

Closing

Remember that becoming a better Scrum Master is an ongoing journey. Continuously seek feedback from your team and stakeholders, reflect on your own performance, and be open to refining your approach.
